Chapter Ten
The next morning, I woke up cranky. Everyone in the house seemed to sense this and gave me a wide berth. Cooper ate his cereal on the opposite side of the table, and Wyatt, after trying to put me in a better mood, found an excuse to head into work early.
None of that really registered for me, because I was too distraught. As of last night, I'd given Kosher a powerful weapon to use against me: truth. His silence on the matter would come at a high price, but I didn't want Wyatt to hear it from Kosher, and I wasn't ready to tell him.
At least I knew exactly where he'd be this morning.
After dropping Cooper off at school, I walked over to the track. Before I could even think about finding a seat, I ran into Anna, who was rushing toward the track. She still had sleep in her eyes, and she seemed a little on edge.
âI overslept,â she told me when I asked, the two of us walking toward the track together. âCoach is going to kill me.â
At the mention of Coach Barker, I instantly wanted to ask Anna if she was taking steroids. But I held my tongue by thin margins, because I didnât want to tip my hand. Still, the thought of this smart, talented young girl being forced into injecting poison made me sick.
Luckily, not visibly sick. Iâd had enough with the puking for a good long while.
âAre you any closer to catching whoever is messing with the meet?â she said.
I shot her a look, my eyebrows shooting up.
She blushed. âCooper told me.â
Cooper. That kid was just like his father. A pretty girl would bat her eyelashes, and heâd spill his guts. I was annoyed with the trait now, but it had worked out well for me on multiple occasions with Wyatt. In fact, that was the reason I agreed to go on our first date.
âSo close I can taste it,â I said, lying to the girl.
Though I was miles away from the culprit, I didnât want Anna worrying about a criminal running around the track while she was competing. The girl had enough on her plate. So, I smiled and acted convincing.
When we hit the Waresville teamâs camp, I said goodbye to Anna and wished her good luck. Then, I focused on getting a seat.
The games had gone on for too long for anyone but the die-hard fans to be there. And people like me who were incurably nosey. Finding a seat in the sparsely populated stands was easy, and I was situated only a few minutes after entering the stadium.
From my high perch, I could see everything. Like a predatory bird, I scanned the track and surrounding area for that awful Officer Kosher. Finding his bushy sideburns in a crowd wasnât hard. I spotted him over by the long jump, arguing with Coach Barker.
I leaned forward, squinting, but I couldnât read their lips from this distance. It looked heated though, and they were both getting in each otherâs faces.
